ROTALIA

2023

A handheld tool to dynamically measure variable distances on curved or organic surfaces to allow the user to optimize their workflow

Utilizing a wheel with a three-inch circumference, the rosalia can measure distance in inches by mechanically tracking the revolutions.

MECHANICAL PRECENDENTS

Understanding that as a wheel is turned, units need to change in relation to it's revolutions.

• WATCH

Watch dial rotation changes date, rotations can measure units

• MECHANICAL COUNTER

Units change in increments as a gear is applied

• ROLLING TAPE MEASURE

As the wheel turns, the numbers change representing revolutions/distance the wheel travels

FORM = ACTION

The form of the model was going to have to be influenced by the users experience and the mechanism inside

PROTOTYPING 02

After pursuing the watch gear mechanism to a finalized working prototype, a decision was made to start again with a mechanical counter.

ADVANTAGES OF NEW MECHANISM:

Smaller gear ratios, Precedent for mechanics, Higher digits, Compact

WORKING FINAL

As the wheel rolls, the 1.00's viewport rotates slowly in order to read the precise increments. As it passes 10, the next view port will turn 1/10th of a revolution and show the next increment.
